General Session: The Reason Enterprises Are Failing at DevOps: To Predict the Future, Look to the Past
General Session: The Reason Enterprises Are Failing at DevOps: To Predict the Future, Look to the Past

Enterprises are universally struggling to understand where the new tools and methodologies of DevOps fit into their organizations, and are universally making the same mistakes. These mistakes are not unavoidable, and in fact, avoiding them gifts an organization with sustained competitive advantage, just like it did for Japanese Manufacturing Post WWII.

The fundamental mistake is believing that DevOps fits on top of the legacy management of people and things, the way we've always done things since the industrial revolution, and it does not. DevOps is not an addition but a replacement: A creeping revolution in the principles of how we run IT. When you look at the History of American Manufacturing and the costly cycles of failure that preceded adaptation to modern practices, you see the present and the future of global IT. Those that could adapt survived. Those that could not died.

Learning history's lessons is an imperative for survival in a world where the most important skill is adapting to continually accelerating change. In this session we'll cover the specific actions necessary to adopt the new philosophy and transform into next generation organizations instead of joining former giants like Blockbuster and Toys-R-Us in history's dustbin of cautionary tales.

Addressing Critical Shortcomings of ETL Tools for Better Data Analytics
Addressing Critical Shortcomings of ETL Tools for Better Data Analytics

Poor data quality and analytics drive down business value. In fact, Gartner estimated that the average financial impact of poor data quality on organizations is $9.7 million per year. But bad data is much more than a cost center. By eroding trust in information, analytics and the business decisions based on these, it is a serious impediment to digital transformation.

Extract, transform and load (ETL) tools like AWC Glue bring much needed functionality. This tool enables new approaches to pulling, processing and pushing data from source to target, and introduces concepts such as performing data transformation tasks using SparkSQL scripts in Apache spark environment. However, there are shortcomings with AWS Glue, leading to a number of challenges and questions:

Where are the necessary coding techniques when it comes to dealing with specific data types and many such technical aspects of traditional ETL tools?

How can data analysts rely on the Glue-Dynamic frame concept for some of the key design aspects when it comes to incremental loads design and data conversion process?

How can accurate reporting be achieved when the data processing step truncates decimals points, creating huge data discrepancies?

At Infostretch, we believe these challenges can be handled by utilizing specific database level functions. In this session, we will showcase real-life experience with such deal-breaking scenarios, and demonstrate how to mitigate these issues without jeopardizing reporting accuracy, compromising on quality, or endlessly waiting for new releases.

Attendees will learn how to overcome the critical shortcomings of the AWS Glue ETL tool to achieve success:

How to use specific database level functions without jeopardizing quality

Address issue of truncating decimals to produce accurate reports

Ensure source system KPIs match up with target system KPIs for complete business insights.

Containers: Don't Skeu Them Up. Use Microservices Instead
Containers: Don't Skeu Them Up. Use Microservices Instead

Skeuomorphism usually means retaining existing design cues in something new that doesn't actually need them. However, the concept of skeuomorphism can be thought of as relating more broadly to applying existing patterns to new technologies that, in fact, cry out for new approaches.

In his session at ServerlessSUMMIT, Gordon Haff, Senior Cloud Strategy Marketing and Evangelism Manager at Red Hat, will discuss why containers should be paired with new architectural practices such as microservices rather than mimicking legacy server virtualization workflows and architectures.

It's far more fruitful and useful to approach containers as something fundamentally new and enabling that's part and parcel of an environment including containerized operating systems, container packaging systems, container orchestration like Kubernetes, DevOps continuous integration and deployment practices, microservices architectures, "cattle" workloads, software-defined everything, management across hybrid infrastructures, and pervasive open source as part of a new platform for cloud apps.

The Gravitational Attraction of Cloud: Big Data is Big, But Cloud is Massive
The Gravitational Attraction of Cloud: Big Data is Big, But Cloud is Massive

When Enterprises started adopting Hadoop-based Big Data environments over the last ten years, they were mainly on-premise deployments. Organizations would spin up and manage large Hadoop clusters, where they would funnel exabytes or petabytes of unstructured data. However, over the last few years the economics of maintaining this enormous infrastructure compared with the elastic scalability of viable cloud options has changed this equation.

The growth of cloud storage, cloud-managed big data environments, and cloud data warehouses like Snowflake, Redshift, BigQuery and Azure SQL DW, have given the cloud its own gravity - pulling data from existing environments.

In this presentation we will discuss this transition, describe the challenges and solutions for creating the data flows necessary to move to cloud analytics, and provide real-world use-cases and benefits obtained through adopting cloud big data environments.

The Great Migration: Retreat from the Cloud Sacrificing Security?
The Great Migration: Retreat from the Cloud Sacrificing Security?

Signs of a shift in the usage of public clouds are everywhere:
  • Previously, as organizations outgrew old IT methods, the natural answer was to try the public cloud approach; however, the public platform alone is not a complete solution.
The move to hybrid, custom, and multi-cloud will become more and more prevalent:
  • At the heart of this technology trend exists a custom solution to meet the needs and concerns of these organizations, including compliance, security, and cost issues.
  • Blending Service and Deployment Models.
  • The “new normal” of enterprise clients includes a hybrid cloud solutions.

Hybrid Cloud the new normal:
  • Benefits require a planned approach and expertise.
  • Organizations' risks get amplified as the boundaries grow.
  • Risks unique to Hybrid Cloud require a Hybrid solutions not just addition of tech.

What’s old is new again:
  • Due diligence and planning before deployment is critical to not only success but is a requirement for compliance.
  • Access management is key and enforcement is more than policy.
  • Data protection become as hybrid as the environment.
           - Data lakes make for poor clouds.
  • Monitoring as a defense of shared infrastructure mean security tools need hybrid ability and technology needs to flex to on-prem through the cloud.

Cloud Security solutions:
  • Don’t get burned on the re-entry complications returning from the cloud.
  • Matching your hybrid cloud to the hybrid security includes compliance that spans your environment.

Cloud-Native: A New Ecosystem for Putting Containers into Production
Cloud-Native: A New Ecosystem for Putting Containers into Production

The standardization of container runtimes and images has sparked the creation of an almost overwhelming number of new open source projects that build on and otherwise work with these specifications.

Of course, there's Kubernetes, which orchestrates and manages collections of containers. It was one of the first and best-known examples of projects that make containers truly useful for production use. However, more recently, the container ecosystem has truly exploded. A service mesh like Istio addresses many of the challenges faced by developers and operators as monolithic applications transition towards a distributed microservice architecture. A tracing tool like Jaeger analyzes what's happening as a transaction moves through a distributed system. Monitoring software like Prometheus captures time-series events for real-time alerting and other uses. Grafeas and Kritis provide security policy attestation and enforcement. And there are many more.

In short, there's an entire new cloud-native ecosystem growing up around containers. Come to this talk by Red Hat technology evangelist Gordon Haff and learn all about it.

Serverless Made Media Stream Processing Simpler But Powerful
Serverless Made Media Stream Processing Simpler But Powerful

Function as a Service is the popular solution of Serverless, which runs a short-lived function. In contrast, we will show a new Serverless: run long-lived function to deal with stream data. Running containers per stream, each container's code footprint became small, and the system complexity got significantly simple. This made it easy to realize a new use case like enriching an application with AI-powered analytics using video stream in real-time.

NTT Communications has developed a new platform with Kubernetes to orchestrate this new style of media stream processing. We will throw a live demo to send voice stream from browser to this platform and run media processing functions in real-time. The functions will be open sourced, and all participants can try it out from tomorrow.

Marketing of Blockchain-Related Initiatives vs. Real-World Applications
Marketing of Blockchain-Related Initiatives vs. Real-World Applications

Throughout the past several years, we at KV LLC have managed to help several companies like YouToken, Libertex, Forex Club, and others with their blockchain-related initiatives, and we noticed the distinct changes in the demand.

In my session, I’ll tell you the transformation of the marketing approach that we had during the peak of ICOs, compared to what we are having right now.

Back in the days, we were focusing on convincing people to purchase one’s idea. We were pretty much promoting something that did not exist and did it quite successfully. Some of those ideas were not even tangible and were too idealistic.

Now, we moved from the era of ICOs and those days when blockchain was just a fancy term (most people did not even know what it meant) to current days, when blockchain technology is used not only by startups, but large companies as well, such as FedEx and Walmart. Promoting small startups raising money for their ICOs was extremely profitable for marketing professionals.

Now the focus has shifted to promoting actual services offered by the players in the field. One of such key players is our client, Propy. Propy is using blockchain technology to automate processes in the real estate world, which will essentially lower the costs spent by property buyers and sellers on transaction fees.

General Session | The Great Correction: Why Are Some Enterprises Fleeing the Public Cloud?
General Session | The Great Correction: Why Are Some Enterprises Fleeing the Public Cloud?

Signs of a shift in the usage of public clouds are everywhere. Previously, as organizations outgrew old IT methods, the natural answer was to try the public cloud approach; however, the public platform alone is not a complete solution. Complaints include unpredictable/escalating costs and mounting security concerns in the public cloud. Ultimately, public cloud adoption can ultimately mean a shift of IT pains instead of a resolution.

That's why the move to hybrid, custom, and multi-cloud will become more and more prevalent. At the heart of this technology trend exists a custom solution to meet the needs and concerns of enterprise organizations, including compliance, security, and cost issues. The “new normal” of enterprise clients is a world of hybrid and multi-cloud solutions, and it is slowly changing the IT technology landscape. Better tools, better management, and easier adoption are emerging. For instance, such as AWS Outposts and Azure Stack. These are big-time, in-demand technologies in the enterprise space, and as these options evolve, we can expect that additional hybrid solutions and integrations will emerge from the market landscape.

Microservice Forensics: Investigating Problems in Production
Microservice Forensics: Investigating Problems in Production

When you’re operating multiple services in production, building out forensics tools such as monitoring and observability becomes essential. Unfortunately, it is a real challenge balancing priorities between building new features and tools to help pinpoint root causes. Linkerd provides many of the tools you need to tame the chaos of operating microservices in a cloud native world.

Because Linkerd is a transparent proxy that runs alongside your application, there are no code changes required. It even comes with Prometheus to store the metrics for you and pre-built Grafana dashboards to show exactly what is important for your services - success rate, latency, and throughput.

In this session, we’ll explain what Linkerd provides for you, demo the installation of Linkerd on Kubernetes and debug a real world problem. We will also dig into what functionality you can build on top of the tools provided by Linkerd such as alerting and autoscaling.

Many people think that blockchain and machine learning sound like a love story. As in most love stories, some end badly. Such thinking and rumors created some myths that became popular.

I would like to go through some practical use cases where combining blockchain and machine learning is a good idea. On the other hand, I would like to overthrow some of the myths and show where combining both technologies is nothing more than a buzzword game.

Using Disaster Recovery as the Foundation to Digital Transformation
Using Disaster Recovery as the Foundation to Digital Transformation

Digital Transformation takes a combination of business and technical processes, best practices, and tools. Key to the success of any digital transformation initiative is disaster recovery tools that foster business continuity. If IT agility, flexibility, and continuous improvement are to be primary goals of your transformation, the underlying platforms can not allow interruptions due to downtime or lack of interoperability. The right DR platform can enable multi-cloud migrations, inter-cloud mobility, and 100% uptime. Experimentation is fostered as journaled backups can easily be rewound and redeployed to any RPO. Your platforms are essentially future proofed as the ability to migrate to and between clouds becomes simple, allowing your transformation initiatives to grow organically to whichever cloud platforms deliver the best features and reliability.

Risk Management When Migrating into a Public Cloud Provider
Risk Management When Migrating into a Public Cloud Provider

As more and more companies embrace the Cloud, many are restricted by pre-cloud policies and requirements; especially when dealing with sensitive data such as PCI, PHI, SPI/PII etc. This makes it hard or not cost effective to enable the migration to the Cloud. With the challenges of a dynamic competition, many are forced to adapt to the Cloud and end up spending excessive operational dollars or compromising on critical components and limiting their effectiveness in leveraging native Cloud services. In this talk we will walk through some of the patterns to consider when moving to the Cloud specifically from a compliance and regulatory requirements perspective. The agenda will cover topics such as:

• Building a Business Case
• Classifying the requirements (Business, Customer, Industry, Data Sovereignty)
• Lift and Ship vs building for the Cloud
• Baking in a Time Factor for setting expectations
• Managing Security, Usability and Cost
• Building re-usable Architecture patterns
• Lessons learnt from the constantly evolving landscape of AWS
• Thoughts on meeting Compliance requirements and passing an Audit

Security Past the Perimeter: An Immune System for the Cloud
Security Past the Perimeter: An Immune System for the Cloud

In an age of borderless networks, security for the cloud and security for the corporate network can no longer be separated. Security teams are now presented with the challenge of monitoring and controlling access to these cloud environments, at the same time that developers quickly spin up new cloud instances and executives push forwards new initiatives.

The vulnerabilities created by migration to the cloud, such as misconfigurations and compromised credentials, require that security teams take a proactive approach, educating employees about the  risks of human error. Cloud infrastructure and SaaS applications are some of the most notorious network blind spots, and with insider threat posing such a significant risk, visibility has also never been more important — or more difficult.

Powered by AI, Darktrace’s Enterprise Immune System technology is the only solution to offer real-time visibility and insight into all parts of a network, regardless of its configuration. By learning a ‘pattern of life’ for all networks, devices, and users, Darktrace can detect threats as they arise and autonomously respond in real time – all without impacting server performance.

In this session, learn:
  • How AI and machine learning are automating advanced threat detection across today’s borderless networks
  • Why AI-driven visibility of both physical and virtual environments allow you to preempt emerging situations by autonomously responding in real time
  • How a proactive approach to cloud security, including communication amongst employees, clear policies, and early threat detection can help to secure Cloud environments
  • What smart prioritization and visualization of threats mean for resource allocation and lower risk

Real-World Patterns for Edge Computing
Real-World Patterns for Edge Computing

We all know that data is exploding at an unprecedented scale. This is largely being fueled by the explosive growth of the Internet of Things (IoT), currently estimated to approach 50 Billion in number by 2020. Whereas most computing devices were previously largely general purpose, when we are talking about IoT, we are talking about single-purpose vertical products that are all generating and emitting an astounding amount of data.

The recent market migration towards centralized cloud solutions has resulted in a pattern where applications are required to push their data to the cloud for processing. This is not scalable at the rate of data growth generated by the IoT. Additionally, the pattern of use of data is changing. Traditionally, data storage was expensive and deriving insight and making decisions the purview of the database or data warehouse. The advent of big data changed all that, ushering in a new era of mass data storage where decisions are now made in real-time on massive fuzzy data sets by machine learning algorithms (rather than by humans).

Even if there was enough storage in the cloud to store all the data, there is no way near enough network to transport all the data to the cloud. The advent of 5G will only increase the amount of Things creating data, while also creating a further imbalance in the network. The hop from Phone or Thing to cellular base station will be faster than the hop from cellular network to Cloud.

This new architectural shift – and what we will be covering in this session - has been termed edge computing. Rather than attempt to pull all of the data back to the cloud, it makes much more sense to process the data at the point of creation. Instead of moving the data, move the compute, harnessing the processing power and resources of all of the Things.

Hybrid Cloud Security - Why a Prevention-First Approach is Paramount
Hybrid Cloud Security - Why a Prevention-First Approach is Paramount

Enterprises need to understand that their biggest cybersecurity threat is not attackers targeting their data or even malicious insiders – it’s the complexity of and lack of visibility into hybrid-cloud environments. The complex nature of these environments makes them a breeding ground for simple but costly mistakes. This is what happened to AWS in 2017 where one incorrect command knocked their S3 service offline, taking dozens of websites and applications offline, impacting hundreds of thousands of businesses and causing millions of dollars in lost revenue.

In order to avoid these types of errors, enterprises need to better understand which employees have the privileges that can lead to these types of errors. Then, they must proactively manage those privileges to shrink their risk exposure using the principle of least privilege (POLP). If not, they run the risk of compromising every security system, policy and procedure they’ve ever worked to put in place.

Know More About Your Ceph Cluster with ELK Stack

Ceph generates quite a few logs which you can use to transform into alerts and do proper analysis of the data. If you tune things right you just might catch a problem before it occurs. Maybe you did have a problem already and you want to analyze it so that it doesn't happen again. We will explore how to enable GELF logging in Ceph and utilizing that with the ELK Stack. Another use we can tie into the ELK stack is the Object storage (RGW). With the use of elasic search we can now search our metadata and sort through important information being stored as objects. This metadata can also be customized with your own fields in RGW. I'll demonstrate live some analysis of a running Ceph cluster with both the logging and RGW metadata search abilities.

Improve SD-WAN Application Performance in Three Simple Steps
Improve SD-WAN Application Performance in Three Simple Steps

Yesterday, applications resided in the data center, while users resided in an office and enterprises relied on carriers for their WAN transport architecture. With this legacy approach, applications resided in centralized data centers with MPLS networks. Today, IT is moving to the cloud and users are mobile with the public internet being an increasingly critical component of the enterprise WAN and application performance. However, as applications move to the cloud, enterprises are struggling with increased application performance issues.

Enter the cloud-ready WAN architecture to better leverage SD-WAN. This shift in architecture from the enterprise premises-based data center to communications hubs help hybrid enterprises span the legacy and cloud environments with SD-WAN.

Because SD-WAN is just a technology, it cannot deliver the application performance users need. So to deliver the best application performance, SD-WAN needs to be combined with optimized network routes, communications/applications hubs (racks of switching equipment and or application services deployed in carrier-neutral data centers) and internet peering. But where do you start? Mark Casey, Founder and CEO of Apcela will discuss three simple steps to enable enterprises to get the most out of their SD-WAN technology.

UniModal IT for Financial Services
UniModal IT for Financial Services

Back in 2014 Gartner came up with the term “Bi-Modal” – with Mode 1 referring to the legacy systems or the System of Records, which was seen more as “keeping the lights on” mode, much to do with stability, whereas Mode 2 referred to the System of Innovation or the System of Differentiation with the need to deal with speed, innovation, and agility.
While there is varied opinion around the very notion of Bi-modal IT, this term has been sold eloquently to C-Suite and for the last 3-4 years CIO’s have been grappling with - “how to deal with 2 speed IT”- essentially how to transform while keeping the light on.
This talk essentially will provide the audience with the insight of "how to move to a Single Speed or Unimodal IT, where they can think of achieving IT Agility not only in the System of Engagement but also in the System of Records. Using DevOps as the underlying lever this talk will elaborate on how to gain speed and velocity without comprising on stability and resiliency across the application portfolio. It will explain how to stand up an end to end integrated DevOps pipeline not only on the distributed technologies (java, .net, node) but also on the legacy side of the house including Mainframe, iseries, and AS400. It will further introduce some of the best practices which the enterprise as a whole needs to adopt to graduate to a Unimodal IT.

Not Your Mother’s Cloud: Best Practices for Enterprise Hybrid Cloud

To enable their developers, ensure SLAs and increase IT efficiency, Enterprise IT is moving towards a unified, centralized approach for managing their hybrid infrastructure. As if the journey to the cloud - private and public - was not difficult enough, the need to support modern technologies such as Containers and Serverless applications further complicates matters. This talk covers key patterns and lessons learned from large organizations for architecting your hybrid cloud in a way that:

Supports self-service, “public cloud” experience for your developers that’s consistent across any infrastructure.

Gives Ops peace of mind with automated management of DR, scaling, provisioning, deployments, etc.

Goes beyond VMs, to future-proof your solution to support Containers, Serverless, and what’s coming next

Improves CAPEX and OPEX across the board, and gets you to a deployable, scalable solution without having to spend years re-architecturing or developing complex integrations.

New Serverless Uses: Maximizing GPU Utilization and Performance

GPUs are useful resources for compute-intensive and highly parallelizable operations tasks such as streaming and parallel computing. However, inefficient resource management generates heavy expenses. Yaron Haviv will explain how to fragments applications to microservices and scale GPUs in and out with serverless for maximum resource efficiency. Instead of wasting costs on every data scientist having his own GPU, 10 data scientists can share 3-4 GPUs and use them as needed.

He will demonstrate how to improve GPU utilization and sharing, resulting in almost four times faster application performance when compared to the use of GPUs within monolithic architectures. Participants will learn how serverless platforms can be fifty times faster when offering GPU support.

Best Practices for GDPR-Complaint Blockchain
Best Practices for GDPR-Complaint Blockchain

The European Union (EU) General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) not only applies to European companies but also to companies outside of the EU who conduct business with EU businesses and consumers. According to the EU Blockchain Observatory and Forum, “Government agencies and regulators in Europe have embraced this new [blockchain] technology for its potential innovation in Europe, and have stated many times that while their goal is the protection of individual rights, they are by no means looking to end blockchain."

Will you be prepared for projects that designate blockchain as the best fit; however, the blockchain business network has to be GDPR compliant? This session covers

(1) the regulations that apply

(2) how to implement the Right To Be Forgotten (RTBF) process without sacrificing immutability, and

(3) how automation with smart contracts is critical for success. In essence, challenges can be overcome with the right blockchain architecture and by following recommended best practices.

The Era of Digital Transformation
In the Era of Digital Transformation, It’s Time for Enterprise Networking to Embrace Cloud Architectures

We are in the midst of the era of Digital Transformation. Cloud computing has become synonymous with computing. We believe that cloud networking will, within the next 24 months, become the new vernacular for networking. The same paradigm shift that has revolutionized computing will transform networking.Over time, monolithic architecture moved into client/server architectures, which then evolved into service-oriented architectures, which has in turn given way to the now ubiquitous microservices/container model. This microservices architecture is the mainstay of cloud and public cloud computing, as well as serverless/utility computing models. The benefits to cloud software architectures are many, including horizontal scale, distributed services and databases, fault tolerance and containerization and programming language independence to name a few.
It is these attributes that we see are for the most part in the large, global SaaS applications such as Amazon’s e-commerce website, Netflix’s streaming service, Facebook and Twitter’s social networks. The same capabilities – with the same global, highly available, and horizontal scale – can be applied to enterprise networking.

As we know, the heart of networking is routing. Interestingly, routing algorithms have maintained the exact same architecture for 30 years. Border Gateway Protocol (BGP4), the routing protocol for the Internet, has been in use since 1994, and has been virtually untouched. These protocols are designed for resiliency and autonomous operation. Even so, there are challenges with the architecture and protocols – most significant is that of Internet performance. Issues with scaling and convergence plague BGP operations, and there have been proposals to replace it altogether. But that has proven impossible due to the massive global installed base. However, the fastest solution and next best option is to augment BGP.

As the industry ramps up digital transformation with AI, ML, IoT and other new technologies, the Internet needs to keep up with the demand and be able to scale, automate and perform.
Building atop BGP4’s flat, decentralized architecture, new routing protocols are leveraging cloud software architectures to develop fast, scalable, and performance-driven routing protocols, embracing both the centralized and the distributed nature of cloud computing.

In this session, we’ll look at the augmentation of BGP using performance feedback loops and centralized orchestration in order to deliver consistent high throughput, mitigate packet loss, and reduce latency.

The Hybrid Cloud Chess Match
The Hybrid Cloud Chess Match

As enterprise workloads proliferate, the dynamic nature of hybrid cloud deployments make the management of both cyber threats and compliance a significant challenge.According to RightScale, on average, companies are using nearly five different cloud environments at a time. Just over one-half are deploying a hybrid cloud strategy, as opposed to only one of five which are committed to a multiple public cloud environment and one of ten which are deploying a multiple private cloud strategy.

In this talk, Caveonix CEO and co-founder, Kaus Phaltankar will address how enterprises must manage their risk posture given this new state of complex hybrid cloud environments, regardless of where workloads reside.

To win in chess, you must stay at least one step ahead of your opponent by anticipating what you have that’s valuable and then developing strategies to keep it “safe.” Workload protection functions very much in the same manner, only at a far greater scale.

Hybrid cloud workloads are highly volatile and have a multitude of potential configuration issues, and potential vulnerabilities due to their installed software versions and patches. They may also have dynamic inter-dependencies and exposure to other application workloads.

In multi-cloud environments, each individual cloud may be based on different technology implementations that result in inconsistent security and policy frameworks. This makes the management of cybersecurity and compliance requirements across the hybrid cloud increasingly complex.

Kaus will address how to protect these workloads in a hybrid cloud environment. Attendees will learn why enterprises need to have a consistent security solution that understands what is being deployed, where it is deployed, what has changed, how they may be subject to the latest threats, how to deploy consistent security policies, and how to proactively mitigate these risks.

Why the Cloud is Perfect for Data Protection
Why the Cloud is Perfect for Data Protection

While more companies are now leveraging the cloud to increase their level of data protection and management, there are still many wondering “why?”

The answer: the cloud actually brings substantial advancements to the data protection and management table that simply aren’t possible without it. The easiest advantage to envision? Unlimited scalability. If a data protection tool is properly designed, the capacity should automatically expand to meet any customer’s needs. The second advantage: the cloud is the simplest way to centralize the storage of all secondary data sources while also providing unlimited compute that can be used to gain additional insight and business value from that data. Finally, the ability to do automated Disaster Recovery (DR) without maintaining a DR facility is unquestionably a major value of the cloud, and simply isn’t possible otherwise. Join W. Curtis Preston, AKA Mr. Backup, as he explains the benefits of cloud-based data protection and management, how to decide if a cloud-based solution is right for you, and best practices when evaluating data management vendors.

How Kubernetes Infrastructure Impacts Cloud-Native Apps from Dev to Production

How Kubernetes Infrastructure Impacts Cloud-Native Apps from Dev to Production

Organizations seeking to containerize traditional applications or build new ones based on microservices architecture often deploy them on their existing virtualized infrastructure. Why wouldn’t they? The VM stack is built on tried-and-true technologies and deep institutional know-how.

But today’s cloud-native world isn’t built to run on yesterday’s infrastructure. New infrastructure, which is architected for the way containers and Kubernetes use compute, storage, and network resources, is needed to empower cloud-native developers. And as you take containers from dev/test to production, running containers on VMs adds a layer of unnecessary management complexity and reduces utilization, often impeding parts of the DevOps process.

This session offers up a technical analysis of how to eliminate the inefficiency of a virtualized stack and build Kubernetes environments that maximize application performance, container density, resource utilization, and enhance the overall ease of consumption for developers across the entire software pipeline.

The Edge Needs a New Data Architecture
The Edge Needs a New Data Architecture

Bold predictions are being made about the disruptive new applications that edge computing will unleash on enterprises and consumers. However, edge computing unlike cloud computing. is a distributed data problem. Creating enterprise grade systems that can deliver geo distributed database capabilities with useful consistency guarantees is extremely challenging and conventional approaches fail at doing these at global scales. For edge computing to become a reality, we need geo-distributed databases that can scale across hundreds of locations worldwide yet act in concert to provide a single coherent multi master database. This in turn requires us to design a system that works on the internet with its unpredictable network topology, use some form of time keeping that is not lossy, and avoid centralized forms of consensus yet still arrive at some shared version of truth in real time.

In this presentation I discuss the needs and design of such a serverless edge platform for stateful, data intensive, realtime applications and web services that need to run in a distributed manner, at the edge, closer to humans (end users), their things (devices) than the cloud can.

The Role of Fast Data in Continuous Hybrid Cloud
The Role of Fast Data in Continuous Hybrid Cloud

In Hybrid Cloud scenarios you are combining services from multiple clouds, or from a cloud with on-premise or colocated services.

The conversation about hybrid-cloud is often related to applications, virtual machines, micro-services and how these things are scaled or moved between clouds or on-premise and cloud. However, a bigger consideration is the data.Almost all hybrid-cloud use-cases require movement of data in addition to movement and scalability of services. Spinning up additional service instances in a cloud, to rapidly and elastically scale, is useless if these services can’t access the data they need.

In this presentation we will consider, through real-world use-cases and examples, how to implement cloud migrations, cloud bursting, and cloud analytics, and how continuous fast data feeds are required to achieve them.

Widespread Adoption of Serverless: Any Cloud, Any Workload
What Is Needed for Widespread Adoption of Serverless: Any Cloud, Any Workload

Developers today want to develop code and not worry about the infrastructure. That is exactly what the serverless computing promises but there are technical and business challenges that are inhibiting its widespread adoption. The serverless frameworks today are cloud-specific creating serious vendor lock-in which eventually becomes a business challenge.

The technical challenges are related to abstractions needed for the adoption and acceleration into application domains and new markets. It requires developers to combine many other services to get the most out of it. Eventually, learning about these services becomes a burden to developers. Also, the technology available today is serverless compute and not serverless storage.

So it is not suitable for long-running and stateful workloads. The current serverless frameworks are only available in public cloud so they are not the best option for the companies that want to run their applications on their private cloud. In this session the audience will learn what is needed in the framework to support any cloud and any workload which will lead to widespread adoption of these technologies.

Real-Time Customer Profile Architected in Cloud and Edge Infrastructure
Real-Time Customer Profile Architected in Cloud and Edge Infrastructure

Every enterprise today is struggling to handle the massive explosion of data that is being driven by rich customer experiences, multiple devices and IoT. These companies are spending time and money trying to build their own infrastructure to manage this data, with the goal of a unified view of their customers to drive exceptional customer experiences.

In order to create these moments that matter, enterprises need to be invest in a trusted enterprise architecture with governance controls. As the average enterprise has more than 400 different and often siloed applications, the value of unifying this data is increasingly important. But the challenge still lies in the fact that the data collected often comes with identities specific from each system, and in order to tie it together in the right way, enterprises need to ensure the data is available at the point of activation.

In this session, Sandeep will cover:
  • How to best navigate a modern cloud infrastructure and edge networks, and how to leverage a heterogeneous cloud deployment of modern and open source technologies
  • The architectural approach to Adobe Experience Platform’s Real-Time Customer Profile and Edge Network
  • The future outlook: where things are headed and how we get there

The Hard, and Not So Obvious, Challenges with Building, Maintaining and Operating a Global Edge Computing Network
The Hard, and Not So Obvious, Challenges with Building, Maintaining and Operating a Global Edge Computing Network

Creating a network of edges is a much harder problem than it appears. It is more complicated than merely standing one or two servers in a few (hundred) far-flung data centers and installing an open source stack in each node.

That’s a start but there is far more to it than that. This session will cover just some of the hard and not-so-obvious things you'll need to do to build out a scalable application delivery platform at the edge, including:

How do you securely deploy an application image, (e.g. a container) to every edge in your network and run them as needed?

How do you do this several times a day if the application developer needs to apply fixes, add enhancements, etc.?

How do you ensure that your application is running in a location close to your end users, without amassing a massive infrastructure bill?

How do you remotely manage a large number of compute clusters, assuming each edge is some container-specific environment?

How do you implement network and resource isolation so no one workload impacts another?
How do you make sure everything works in concert, on a global basis?

Continuous Reliability: A Proactive Approach to Balancing Agility & Stability in DevOps
Continuous Reliability: A Proactive Approach to Balancing Agility & Stability in DevOps

Every enterprise undergoing technology transformation faces reliability challenges. In an ever-changing environment with a growing global competitive landscape, organizations need to be nimble and move quickly – without compromising the services their customers are depending on.To solve for the agility part of this equation, many development and DevOps teams turn to new processes, tools and architectures like continuous integration (CI), continuous delivery/deployment (CD), microservices and more. These advancements allow them to iterate quickly and speed software delivery. However, these practices can introduce new layers of complexity and often put stability at risk.

Enter Continuous Reliability.

Continuous Reliability (CR) is a new framework that brings together automated code quality gates and contextual feedback loops within a CI/CD workflow to help organizations overcome the agility-stability paradox and proactively find and fix errors BEFORE they make it to production. CR can mean the difference between hoping your code might work in production, and actually knowing it will.
In this session, Tal Weiss, co-founder and CTO of OverOps, will define continuous reliability, provide actionable steps and best practices based on real-world examples, and show how attendees can implement CR within their own organization.

Ultra-Modern Major Incident Management
Ultra-Modern Major Incident Management

Alerting platforms brought notifications into the modern age. Push messages, voice calls, and extensive on-call scheduling features have reduced the Mean Time to Engage, Escalate, and Resolve. This was Modern Incident Management. But in this day of ChatOps, remote workers, and global development teams, the paradigm must shift again. With multiple ticketing systems, chat tools, status pages, and data sources – even within the same organization! – you need to collaborate and inform across teams more than ever.

Sure this can be achieved with copy-pasting and chair swiveling; but why burn valuable time that could be better spent actually troubleshooting the issue? You need a way to connect your tools quickly and easily, without hand-coding every trigger and response to keep your services available for customers. For these reasons and more, we launched xMatters Flow Designer. Watch as we use Flow Designer to build a new Ultra-Modern Incident Workflow for Splunk Alerts that involves Slack, Jira, and Jenkins. We’ll use the drag, drop and connect actions to reduce developer workload and resolve an incident before it can affect customers.

OpenStack and Kubernetes Get the Heat Treatment
OpenStack and Kubernetes Get the Heat Treatment

Take advantage of autoscaling, and high availability for Kubernetes with no worry about infrastructure. Be the Rockstar and avoid all the hurdles of deploying Kubernetes. So Why not take Heat and automate the setup of your Kubernetes cluster? Why not give project owners a Heat Stack to deploy Kubernetes whenever they want to?

Hoping to share how anyone can use Heat to deploy Kubernetes on OpenStack and customize to their liking.

This is a tried and true method that I've used on my OpenStack clusters and I will share the benefits, bumps along the way and the lessons learned.

These Heat templates will deploy a cluster of Nova instances running Kubernetes from the Kubic project.

The cluster uses Flannel to provide an overlay network connecting pods deployed on different nodes. You can determine the initial size of the cluster via a configuration parameter when you deploy it, and the cluster will scale dynamically (up to a specified maximum size) due to CPU load on the Kubernetes nodes.

Multi-Cloud Migration Provisioning-as-a-Service
Multi-Cloud Migration Provisioning-as-a-Service

Public clouds are being widely adopted by organizations of varying sizes. However, lately the public cloud space has gotten increasingly crowded with large number of players. Among them, few public cloud providers stand out and have a dominant market share like AWS, Azure and GCP.
These service providers offer a large variety of services which keeps growing over the period. And as a result, if an organization uses bunch of services from these providers, managing them could become a cumbersome task after they achieve scale. To get rid of vendor locking and utilize the best services out of available from cloud service provides multi-cloud is getting top option to migration on cloud for enterprises.

An enterprise running with large legacy systems would like to move towards latest technologies and modernization with vendor agnostic, provision of using best services, faster time-to-market, cost optimization and above all easy to operate in cost efficient manner.

What can also become tedious is the provisioning of multi-cloud resources. Data lake, Analytics, AI, Machine learning, serverless / micro-services architecture wherein various interfaces for modern web, mobile applications, voice interfaces etc. As a result, once the application architecture is ready, provisioning can take a lot of time and can be error prone. Also, once the resources are being provisioned, integrating them with business applications for seamless continuous integration and deployment, is another challenge.

In order to alleviate some of the challenges listed above, Multi-Cloud Migration Provisioning-as-a-Service is an offering that focuses on simplifying the Enterprises migration to cloud.

Public Cloud Performance: Which Is the Right Cloud Provider for Your Business?
Public Cloud Performance: Which Is the Right Cloud Provider for Your Business?

Given the proliferation of the public cloud within the enterprise architecture and the dominance of the Big 3 – AWS, Google Cloud Platform (GPC), and Microsoft Azure – this session will present an agnostic, first-of-its-kind comparison of the performance of the three major public cloud vendors.

Ultimately, it is important for IT leaders to understand that cloud architectures are complex and not to be taken lightly. Enterprises heavily relying on the public cloud, spanning multiple AZs, regions, and providers should arm themselves with the right data to understand performance and changes over time.
Overall, the collected performance data indicates comparable and robust network performance across all three cloud providers, yet geographical exceptions persist. Cloud connectivity architectures vary between the three providers, with corresponding differences in the level of Internet exposure when connecting to the cloud.

Given the globally distributed nature of customers, their client base, and infrastructure, plus the inherently variable nature of the Internet, monitoring global performance of cloud providers is imperative for determining how their application or service performs on a global scale.

Relying on the cloud means relying on the Internet – that black box shrouded in a cloak of invisibility that no enterprise owns or controls – yet businesses rely on it for outcomes. And as multi-cloud increasingly becomes the norm, visibility issues are significantly compounded. Whether an enterprise is deploying G Suite and wants to monitor performance across branch offices, or if it wants to deploy its own applications hosted on GCP and ensure it has the most control possible over the end-user experience, visibility into how these applications are traversing the Internet across multiple service providers is critical for ensuring exceptional digital experiences

Proactive Monitoring
Proactive Monitoring

Though there is a long lineup of monitoring tools, both SAS and on-prem, companies struggle to cover all the aspects of monitoring and fail to find issues with production environments proactively due to 2 issues mainly:

- tools cannot cover all the monitoring requirements out-of-the-box as application monitoring is custom in nature and companies don't build monitoring-aware applications.

- lack of understanding of all aspects of monitoring with those responsible for rolling out monitoring solutions which result in sub-optimal solutions.

The presentation would cover how following aspects of monitoring are addressed systematically by instrumenting the applications, picking right tools and rolling out a process that focuses on fine-tuning overall monitoring continually.

- System monitoring
- Platform monitoring
- Application monitoring
- Log aggregation & operations analytics
- Last-mile monitoring
- Meta-monitoring

Leveragng the Cloud as a Smart Infrastructure
Leveragng the Cloud as a Smart Infrastructure

Enterprises worldwide are looking for ways to better leverage the cloud as a smarter infrastructure approach. While most have found success in pushing server-based apps to the, one workload has continually eluded architects around the globe in their attempt to leverage the cloud – unstructured data. It’s been surprisingly challenging to find a way of using the cloud to replace the millions of on-premise file servers that users pound on daily. With the growing footprint of unstructured data and the escalating cost of ownership for on-prem storage infrastructure (backup, availability, capacity, and audit/compliance management) and the associated risk of these platforms (data loss, breach, compliance issues), finding ways to leverage the cloud for this has become a holy grail for infrastructure teams.

A number of technologies have evolved into cloud-friendly formats that can now address this workload, allowing dozens or even hundreds of distributed file servers to be consolidated into a single, cloud-resident footprint. These include the latest in distributed network file systems, storage-optimized network protocols, intelligent caching approaches, and global locking schemes that - when used together - can deliver savings of up to 70% on the storage ownership equation and a far more secure and manageable environment.

The objective of this session is to provide the audience with a fundamental understanding of the technologies involved in a successful cloud storage consolidation project today, the basic implementation steps involved, and an overview of a documented methodology that outlines how to determine the ROI from such a project.

Power Panel: Multi-Cloud and What It Really Means
Power Panel: Multi-Cloud and What It Really Means

Now that we're more than 10 years into the cloud revolution, it's clear that cloud computing does not provide a simple, one-stop solution to developing and deploying 21st century IT architectures. As technology providers have become more sophisticated, and as enterprise IT professionals show their traditional skepticism to "magic bullets," the idea of working with multiple cloud technologies has emerged.

Multi-cloud is the idea of deploying combinations of onsite virtualization, third-party hosting and colocation, and public clouds such as Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, Rackspace, and Google Cloud Engine. This panel addresses the real-world challenges in working with complex, multi-cloud environments and how doing so can improve an organization's ability to move quickly, adopt its strategy and tactics as needed, and stay current with its competition.

Serverless Applications You Can Implement Today: 3 Key Use Cases and Design Patterns
Serverless Applications You Can Implement Today: 3 Key Use Cases and Design Patterns

Serverless applications increase developer productivity and time to market, by freeing engineers from spending time on infrastructure provisioning, configuration and management. Serverless also simplifies Operations and reduces cost - as the Kubernetes container infrastructure required to run these applications is automatically spun up and scaled precisely with the workload, to optimally handle all runtime requests.

Recent advances in open source technology now allow organizations to run Serverless and Kubernetes reliably, at scale, also on on-premises and private cloud infrastructure. The ability to achieve the benefits of Serverless on existing infrastructure - and not having to rely solely on public clouds - has greatly increased the adoption of Serverless across industries, including financial services, IoT, retail, healthcare, and more.

Serverless offers an incredible opportunity for business accelerate innovation and reduce operational costs - both for green field applications, as well as for established organizations with legacy applications and technical debt.

In this talk, we would discuss 3 key uses cases primed for Serverless, and share design patterns and tips to allow you to take advantage of Serverless in your organization, today.

Lifting the Fog from the Public Cloud: Using Cloud Activity Logs and Decoys to Secure Cloud-Resident Data
Lifting the Fog from the Public Cloud: Using Cloud Activity Logs and Decoys to Secure Cloud-Resident Data

Businesses are moving data to the cloud faster than they can secure it, creating significant security risks. This presentation will show how cloud data loss risk monitoring and deception technology can close the security gaps in public file sharing clouds.Introduction:

The asymmetry of attacker and defender in cybersecurity is well known. This is exacerbated by enterprise digital transformation initiatives, pushing volumes of corporate data into public clouds faster than businesses can protect them. According to a new report by ESG, almost one-quarter (24%) of respondents said that more than 40% of their corporate data resides on public cloud services today. This is expected to more than double to 58% of organizations within 24 months. But this quest to reap the benefits of the cloud -- productivity, better collaboration, and lower costs -- has come at a great price, lack of visibility and control, and hence, increased risk in losing sensitive corporate data.
More than 40% of data stored in public clouds is considered “Sensitive.” Yet, three-quarters of respondents to ESG’s survey believe that at least 20% of their public cloud data is insufficiently secured, and 50% of all respondents said they have lost cloud-resident data. Protecting digitally-stored and shared data, revealing attackers and uncovering identities remain vexing problems for security teams. Cloud data loss risk monitoring and deception techniques are uniquely positioned for the task of increasing visibility and regaining control.

How We Got Here:

This presentation will explore the three major contributing factors driving the loss of data from a public cloud share (Microsoft OneDrive, Google Drive, etc.), and share some real-world examples of these types of data losses, as well as the impact on a company’s bottom line when sensitive data is stolen or leaked. These three contributors are:
Security policy violations
Stolen or “borrowed” access credentials (Masqueraders)
BYOD/Shadow IT

Next, we will walk through the security risks that are specific to sharing data in the cloud, even with legitimate users, such as link sharing, misconfiguration of security settings, etc. The very act of sharing links to files stored in a public cloud puts them at risk. Just recently, data from more than 90 companies was exposed through Box accounts due to employees sharing web links. Some of the companies whose data was exposed included Apple, the Discovery Channel, Herbalife, Schneider Electric, and even Box itself.

Decoys and Document Behavior Monitoring

The inability to detect and understand modern attacker-type breaches has created new interest in deception technology. This presentation will provide a clearer definition of deception technology: what it is, and what it is not. Deception technology is not “hacking back.”

The use of strategically distributed decoys enables organizations to leverage counterfeit resources for the attacker to find, setting alluring traps by placing beacons in phony but highly convincing documents. These documents offer the benefit of low false positives (legitimate users have no reason to be in contact with decoys), and because they are in-line, they take up very little bandwidth. When a decoy is breached, the security team can choose to let the attacker continue while they watch, which aids in the development of intelligence about specific attack vectors, and attackers’ ultimate goals. The goal is to create enough doubt within the hacker that they’ve stolen anything of real value, that they decide to back out of the cloud environment and move on. This is very different from the “eye for an eye” mentality many associate with “hacking back.” No systems are penetrated or destroyed; instead, the purpose is to gather information on the intruder to turn over to law enforcement.
Deception technology in the form of decoys can aid forensics and response investigations and mitigation capabilities, allowing organizations to actively defend their infrastructure within their own environment and making it easier to investigate, contain, and engage with intruders.

How do cloud activity logs and decoys work together? It’s a two-pronged approach:

Monitoring and tracking documents. By applying a layer of security at the document level to files stored in the public cloud, security operations teams can know, in real time, when documents have been opened, modified, downloaded, and shared to other users – and even the physical locations of the recipients of these shared documents can usually be determined. Defenders can analyze cloud activity logs to determine the extent of the problem. Cloud log analytics can alert personnel to possibly misconfigured cloud share access controls, or user security violations.
Active defense decoys. Using highly realistic but fake documents, security professionals can “set traps” for would-be cybercriminals (both internal and external). Strategically placing decoy documents within the public cloud share uses proven techniques to detect adversaries earlier in the lifecycle of an attack. By staging decoys within the operational network, security professionals gain the same benefits of honeynets, but without the hassle of managing and deploying phony networks.

Decoys strategically placed within the operational networks avoids the risk that attackers will not penetrate a honeynet.

When executed properly, an active defense strategy changes the asymmetry of cybersecurity, giving defenders the advantage.

Real-world examples of active defense decoys:

Ransomware Attacker Revealed. A large telecom company experienced a ransomware attack that seemingly utilized portions of the NSA leaked malware. Post-attack forensics determined that the adversary had penetrated the organization through a vulnerable set-top box, which then allowed the attacker to riffle through the organization’s folders and directories and encrypt the data on a corporate server. Identifying this attacker, thwarting the attack in its final stages and not paying the ransom became a top priority. In order to receive the ransom in bitcoin, communication between attacker and target was conducted via the Tor chat protocol. The telecom company claimed that it had paid the bitcoin ransom, but in actuality it had not. Instead, the company’s CISO used a decoy document disguised as a bitcoin payment page. The attacker received the confirmation page over Tor and proceeded to open and review the document on his phone. The decoy triggered an alert upon opening, and conveyed geofencing and telemetry insights that allowed the security team to reveal the attacker via his phone service provider.

A Greedy Insider’s Plans Are Foiled. A large enterprise experienced a stock-tampering case that demonstrated a financial fraud attack. The company was suspicious that a rogue insider had been accessing confidential files about the company’s financial performance, and illegally benefiting from inside knowledge of an impending acquisition. It was clear that the insider was leaking and manipulating news about the target company to affect its market valuation. Decoy documents containing compelling information about the target company were strategically placed in file shares. One of the documents was later opened externally at the home of the alleged inside attacker, triggering an alert, surfacing his identity and providing proof for law enforcement. The FBI then did its duty.

A Practical Approach to Cloud Security, Architecture and Implementation
A Practical Approach to Cloud Security, Architecture and Implementation

While cloud computing provides lower Infrastructure cost, higher agility and faster delivery, it also presents higher operational and security risks for a business critical assets; but a well-designed solution and security architecture will keep businesses safe during and after migrating their assets to the cloud.

Max has researched and identified many of the security risks associated with migrating to public cloud infrastructure. During the research, he also recommended solutions and designed a secure cloud architecture to manage these risks; and his recommendations are based on industry best practices and aligns with the AWS Well-Architected Framework. In 2018, his research was published at Cornell University and he programmed his recommended architecture into thousands of lines of Infrastructure Codes.

With Data breaches on the rise, the total number of compromised data is expected to increase from over 14.7 billion to about 33 billion by 2023. Max practical cloud security and architecture approach will help keep businesses safe before and after migrating their data and applications to a public cloud environment, this will help reduce the number of data breaches in a cloud environment.

Large Affordable Server Memory for Public and Private Cloud
Large Affordable Server Memory for Public and Private Cloud

DRAM pricing remains the highest component cost in server economy. Even in public cloud, large memory instances cost in multiples more than smaller-memory systems. Further, DRAM scale is quite limited, to the 6TB range in on-premise deployments and even lower in cloud, which makes some workload impossible to run.

ScaleMP's MemoryONE is solving these problems with Software-defined Memory leveraging affordable NVM as system memory, transparently. Using MemoryONE, you can significantly reduce your cost by expanding memory beyond specification limits - to reduce the total number of servers for your application, or by replacing majority of the DRAM expense with NVM and software-defined Memory. MemoryONE is a drop-in replacement, with no change to the rest of the hardware and software stack, and the performance of MemoryONE is near-DRAM as shown by many benchmarks for cloud applications.

In this technical presentation, we will walk through the basics of Software-defined Memory, how it is implemented in MemoryONE, and also do a hands-on demo.

Day 3 Keynote: Serverless 2019 and Beyond
Serverless 2019 and Beyond

"Is serverless another passing technology fad or the new standard for application deployment in cloud computing?” It’s a good question and the topic of this presentation. We will discuss the current state of serverless computing and the many considerations before investing time and resources in serverless infrastructure.

For many, data center priorities have shifted from absolute uptime and performance to ”move fast and break things” as espoused by Silicon Valley, a great mantra for those with limited legacy systems and a greenfield of new products. Though the question for many enterprises though is "How does serverless integrate into their existing data center strategy?"

The discussion will not only explain the state of today’s growing serverless landscape but how you can integrate your existing data center with a cloud-native serverless architecture.

General Session: Conquering Networked Applications Using Ballerina Programming Language
General Session: Conquering Networked Applications Using Ballerina Programming Language

Ballerina is the next generation programming language, which redefined what means to be "general purpose". Historically, programming languages concentrated on single machine execution, in a controlled environment, and also for good reason, because any other external interactions were out of the scope of a programming language, at least in the bygone days that is. But now, the communication network is something that is always there, and software often doesn't work alone. But rather, they work more and more by communicating with each other to do something meaningful. So hiding this network from our code is no longer an option, and we try to use various frameworks and libraries get the functionality we need. Ballerina is a general purpose programming language, which has built its core concepts and functionalities to support creation of networked application. These features include the built-in support for services/resources, transactions, and resilient communication support, and also combines with a type system which further enhances these operations.

In this session, Anjana will go through Ballerina, in understanding the motivation behind this language, the features it introduces, and why it is a critical and timely addition to the tools and technologies we would need now.

Reinventing Talent Acquisition DevOps Style

Just as brilliant drummers have their pick of bands, top cloud-native developers and project managers can be choosy about their employers. They’re the rock stars of the business and they know it. If you’re not a “destination company” like Amazon, Facebook or Google, how do you entice top talent to work for you? And if you’re being wooed, what are the tip-offs that you’ll be valued?
We’ve been asking ourselves the same questions, and in this talk I'll share an approach that’s working. Your company can become more of a destination company in today’s “seller’s market” by applying a DevOps mindset to the way you recruit, hire, onboard and retain talent.

Serverless vs Containers: A Case Study of Building and Securing Real-World Microservices
Serverless vs Containers: A Case Study of Building and Securing Real-World Microservices

Amazon, Google, and Microsoft are all pushing Serverless because they claim that it is easier and cheaper for their customers. At the same time, we've seen a rapid adoption of container technologies and orchestrators (such as Kubernetes), with similar promises of faster, cheaper deployments at "an unprecedented scale".
As the size and cost of our own cloud infrastructure was increasing, we decided to try implementing a backend component that's powering one of our biggest products using both Serverless and Containers. The goal was to compare these technologies in terms of overall developer experience, cost, scaling and security, to see if it would make sense for us to use one or the other.
During this session, he'll present the results of this Serverless VS Containers experimentation. Attendees will get an overview of what we discovered in terms of benefits and downsides of each technology, and how to deploy, use, and secure them in the context of a "real-world" application.

Artificial Intelligence: The Good. The Bad, and The Ugly
Artificial Intelligence: The Good. The Bad, and The Ugly

Artificial intelligence, machine learning, neural networks. We're in the midst of a wave of excitement around AI such as hasn't been seen for a few decades. But those previous periods of inflated expectations led to troughs of disappointment. This time is (mostly) different.

Applications of AI such as predictive analytics are already decreasing costs and improving reliability of industrial machinery. Pattern recognition can equal or exceed the ability of human experts in some domains. It's developing into an increasingly commercially important technology area. (Although it's also easy to look at wins in specific domains and generalize to an overly-optimistic view of AI writ large.)

In this session, Red Hat Technology Evangelist for Emerging Technology Gordon Haff will examine the AI landscape and identify those domains and approaches that have seen genuine advance and why. He'll also discuss some of the specific ways in which both organizations and individuals are getting up to speed with AI today.

Using Artificial Intelligence for Evil
Using Artificial Intelligence for Evil

Artificial intelligence is positively affecting our world in previously unimaginable ways across many different industries. The use of AI is particularly interesting in the cybersecurity industry because of its unique ability to scale and prevent previously unseen zero-day attacks and for automating complicated analysis and processes at machine speed. But just in the way drug cartels built their own submarines and cellphone towers to evade law enforcement, so too will cyber-criminals build their own AI systems to carry out malicious attacks.

AI is a force for good and has demonstrated great success thus far in security applications; but AI can also be used for evil. Malcolm Harkins, Chief Security and Trust Officer at Cylance, will cover the basics of AI technology, how AI is currently being used for evil and suggested ways to combat AI attacks.

Through this session attendees will learn and understand:

• What AI is and is not, how an AI algorithm is developed.

• How AI algorithms can be undermined and how AI can be used by attackers.

• How AI is being successfully used in security and what the future may hold.

Building Maintainable, Observable Applications on Serverless Architecture
Building Maintainable, Observable Applications on Serverless Architecture

Using serverless computing has a number of obvious benefits over traditional application infrastructure - you pay only for what you use, scale up or down immediately to match supply with demand, and avoid operating any server infrastructure at all.

However, implementing maintainable and scalable applications using serverless computing services like AWS Lambda poses a number of challenges. The absence of long-lived, user-managed servers means that states cannot be maintained by the service. Longer function invocation times (referred to as cold starts) become very important to track, because they impact the response time of the service and will impose additional cost. Additionally, the transition to smaller individual components (much like breaking a monolithic application into microservices) results in a simpler deployment model, but makes the system as a whole increasingly complex.

In this talk, the speaker will discuss patterns and best practices around architecting and implementing code in serverless environments, specifically around how to build maintainable serverless code and minimize the occurrence of cold starts. Additionally, the speaker will cover how to properly instrument applications and supporting services so that your systems remain easily observable.

CI/CD In the Serverless Era
CI/CD In the Serverless Era

Serverless development introduces a new methodology of how to build real “cloud native” applications or workloads. In monolithic and microservices architectures, it is simple to develop locally and then push the code to the CI/CD pipeline to be integrated and tested with the work of others. It is relatively simple to write and run an integration test as well and use a staging environment like the "real" environment. In some teams, developers are doing all these tasks, but in many, there are dedicated DevOps and QA engineers to continue the process after the developer checks in his code.

Practicing serverless, the developer carries the entire responsibility to do all of the above. In this talk, we’ll share the process and tools we use for CI/CD to our serverless based application at Lumigo.

- Testing Methodology
- Deployment Pipeline, combining Bash, AWS CLI, and Serverless Framework to create a seamless

Decentralized Cloud Communication Network
Decentralized Cloud Communication Network

As the centralized telecommunication industry falls short in protecting user privacy and security, the industry calls for a solution to better handle the user data and enable developers to build their stacks at a lower cost. The blockchain-powered decentralized network meet the needs as the user data are stored in nodes located in different countries without a middleman.

TOP Network originated from the common underlying network layer of Dingtone, CoverMe and SkyVPN, three communication Apps that have attracted 60 million users in total. TOP team envisioned the disruptive future blockchain would bring in to the communication industry and started developing decentralized communication services in 2017.TOP tried to find an existing public blockchain platform to serve as a ledger to carry the transactions at the very beginning, but no blockchain platform could reach such a high TPS for communication services. In the end, TOP had no choice but decided to build its own ledger – a general-purpose public blockchain platform that can handle real-world business of any size or volume. The three communication apps along with the 60 million global users, will be ported to TOP Network upon the launch of Mainnet in late June and generate huge volumes of transactions to the ecosystem.

Is Everything in the Cloud?
Is Everything in the Cloud?

Having to undergo an onsite assessment for a cloud environment sounds like an oxymoron, right? Many organizations tell their auditor that because they are a cloud-based organization, they do not want or need an onsite assessment. A new, dangerous trend that we’ve seen is auditors complying with that request. Audit firms advertise that they can effectively conduct an audit 100% remotely. This disregards physical controls that are in place to safeguard sensitive data and the frameworks that require testing of physical controls.

Not everything is in the cloud, and it’s irresponsible to claim that everything is in the cloud. Offices, employees, weather patterns, heating and cooling systems, power regulation, device management, physical security controls — these things don’t exist in the cloud. Physical security and onsite assessments must be a major component of cloud security and the shared responsibility model.

As more organizations migrate massive amounts of data to the cloud, it drives both cloud service providers and customers to consider how the cloud will change their privacy, security, and compliance efforts. Lack of security in the cloud can be detrimental to both providers and customers. In this session, Shannon Lane will educate the audience through lessons learned from recent breaches, his own experiences as an information security auditor, and best practices for cloud security.

Designing a Highly Secured, Hybrid, Multi-Cloud Infrastructure for an Enterprise -- a Case Study
Designing a Highly Secured, Hybrid, Multi-Cloud Infrastructure for an Enterprise -- a Case Study

For many large enterprises and government agencies, establishing a cloud infrastructure consisting of multiple cloud service providers (CSPs) is a necessity to provide alternative services, avoid vendor lock-in, benefit from competing prices, and mitigate potential risks. These large enterprise and government agencies also require hybrid cloud infrastructure to meet controls when their data centers connect to the public clouds for identity federation, security monitoring, cloud management, and on-prem to cloud system communication. Implementing comprehensive security controls for moderate to high security categorization, therefore, obtaining Authorization to Operate (ATO) for moderate to high security impact systems, is another necessity for the enterprises and agencies to deploy their mission critical systems to the cloud. How do you put all these requirements together, and design a highly secured, hybrid and multi-cloud infrastructure for an enterprise with satisfactory security, usability, stability, manageability and performance quality attributes? In this presentation, we will work through a case study to build an enterprise-level multi-cloud infrastructure in AWS and Azure. Specifically, we will present:

•Multi-cloud adoption strategy
•Enterprise cloud account management
•High level hybrid multi-cloud architecture
•Multi VPC (AWS) or vNet (Azure) network design
•On-premises to Cloud network design
•High availability, backup and recovery
•Security-in-depth architecture

Identity federation, multi-factor authentication to cloud portal and VM console
Centralized perimeter and zone security design
Centralized logging, auditing design
Centralized SIEM design
Anti-virus, intrusion detection, vulnerability management

•Cloud operation: patching and upgrading strategy
•Single-pane-of-glass multi-cloud management
•End-to-end infrastructure as code to automate the entire cloud and on-premises service provisioning

At the end, we will also present a technology decision tree used to facilitate the process for selecting appropriate on-premises and cloud technologies based on security, viability, total cost of ownership (TCO), and efficiency. We will also discuss and demonstrate a cloud center of excellence (CoE) framework and initiative to improve the maturity of cloud adoption processes.

Leader Election Process Inside Dynamic Auto Scalable Software Applications
Dynamic Auto Scalable Software Applications

Dynamic auto scalable software applications having multiple custom schedulers running as part of a Multi-Cluster often have the need to execute code in exactly one Application Instance. This pattern can be used to implement processing which must only be performed once within the entire application. This is achieved via a leader election and even job distribution. Microservices utilize this software pattern to ensure all future schedulers that will wake up in the future will stream the events for marketing campaigns. It is so important that we should not reach a customer with several duplicate messages through multiple channels like email, Direct Mail etc. When a custom configured, persisted scheduler wakes only one Application Instance will start processing the customer information to determine the eligibility to reach a customer and stream those events through the specific channels. Ensuring exactly one Node/Scheduler election to run a custom scheduled job ensures events are not duplicated resulting in duplication of work and wasted computer resources from technology and duplicate campaigns from business perspective.

Also, a Scheduler is non-preemptive. Thus, if an Application Instance is running the Scheduler and another Application Instance is eligible to run the Scheduler, the eligible Application Instance must not preempt the Scheduler already running; running Scheduler is allowed to complete.
Apart from that having multiple custom configured scheduled jobs, this algorithm should be responsible to evenly and randomly choosing a node for load distribution of the job election leaders.
The leader election algorithm is aware of the Application Instance version. If a Multi- Cluster contains Application Instances with different versions the Scheduler must only run in the newer version Application Instances.
